A tapered headset is a modern bicycle steering system where the upper and lower bearings have different sizes. The design uses a smaller bearing up top and a larger, wider bearing at the bottom. It matches a fork with a “tapered steerer tube”—a tube that is 1 1/8 inches at the top and flares out to 1.5 inches at the bottom.
